The Supernatural Shamanic Rock Paintings of Tanzania

Alliance Francaise de Dar es Salaam cordially invites you to its Exhibition Hall on the evening of June 11, 2009 at 6:30 PM to attend the opening of a most unusual and fascinating exhibition of prints. The Supernatural Shamanic Rock Paintings of Tanzania is a collection of precise reproductions of actual prehistoric rock paintings from central Tanzania created by ancient Sandawe Bushman shaman-artists. Dating as early as 29,000 years ago to possibly more than 50,000 years, they echo back to the dawn of art and religion. The images are depictions of the out-of-body journeys of shamans into the spirit worlds beneath and above the earth during altered states of consciousness, also known as trance. Each one has been silk-screen printed on exquisite handmade papers from common local plants and bark whose rustic looks and earthy tones and textures closely resemble the rocks on which the original images were painted. Sales of the prints and related items go directly to the Rock Art Conservation Center of Tanzania, a non-profit organization located in Arusha, that is devoted entirely to documenting, interpreting, and preserving Tanzania’s rock paintings, and developing a rock art tourism industry in areas with high concentrations of these sites and paintings. This would provide training, employment, and income to the communities, and convert them into the custodians and protectors of the sites against escalating acts of human vandalism. TANZANIAN ROCK PAINTINGS REVEAL HALLUCINOGENIC SECRET OF ANCIENT BUSHMAN SHAMANS. Arusha: Rock paintings from the Kondoa-Irangi districts of central Tanzania have revealed an ancient psychedelic secret to archaeologist John Cavallo. Possibly dating to well over 30,000 years ago, these mysterious red images were created on the walls of secluded rock overhangs by Sandawe Bushman shaman-artists (“medicine men”). They consist of thousands of renderings of extraterrestrial-looking humanoids; bizarre part-human, part-animal and insect beings; semi-realistic animals; and numerous geometric motifs.
